wc is a program that can count (and print) the number of newline (lines), words and byte counts for files (including stdin).
Example - using wc to count the number of words in a file:
$ wc -w gutenberg/1342-0.txt 124592 gutenberg/1342-0.txt
Example - using wc to count the number of lines in a file:
$ wc -l gutenberg/1342-0.txt 13427 gutenberg/1342-0.txt
